Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is our opportunity to honor one of the most transformative pieces of legislation in American history.
This landmark law, born from the courage and sacrifice of civil rights activists, outlawed discriminatory practices that had long suppressed the voices of Black Americans and other marginalized communities. Recognizing this anniversary not only pays tribute to the struggle for justice and equality but also reaffirms our collective commitment to protecting and strengthening the right to vote for all. At a time when voting rights continue to face challenges, commemorating this milestone serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to ensure a truly inclusive democracy.
Electing Democrats in Virginia in 2025 is pivotal for safeguarding and advancing voting rights and civil liberties in the Commonwealth.
- It’s Democrats who introduced bills to prevent voter roll purges, especially affecting military families, and to strengthen election board responsibilities.
- It’s Democrats who initiated a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the restoration of voting rights for individuals who have completed felony sentences.
- It’s Democrats who initiated constitutional amendments to protect reproductive freedom, abortion rights, and marriage equality.
These initiatives face opposition from Republicans. Electing Democrats – as Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and expanding the Democratic majority in the Virginia General Assembly – will ensure the passage and implementation of these critical protections, reinforcing Virginia’s commitment to civil liberties and democratic participation.
