SUMMARY:Dems After Dark: Women's History Month 2024
DESCRIPTION:@ Twisted Track Brewpub\, 523 Shenandoah Ave NW\, Roanoke\, VA 24016 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us in celebration of Women’s History Month 2024. Please consider donating individually wrapped snacks for Turning Point Domestic Violence Shelter afterschool program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe draw our inspiration for the evening from the National Women’s History Alliance whose 2024 theme for this year celebrates “Women Who Advocate for Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion.” \n\n\n\nFrom the NWHA: “Today\, equity\, diversity and inclusion are powerful driving forces that are having a wide-ranging impact on our country. As members of families\, civic and community groups\, businesses and legislative bodies\, women are in the forefront of reevaluating the status quo. They are looking anew at what harmful social policies and behaviors exist and\, often subtly\, determine our future. In response\, women in communities across the nation are helping to develop innovative programs and projects within corporations\, the military\, federal agencies and educational organizations to address these injustices. \n\n\n\n“It takes courage for women to advocate for practical goals like equity\, diversity and inclusion when established forces aim to misinterpret\, exploit or discredit them. Throughout 2024\, we honor local women from the past and present who have taken the lead to show the importance of change and to establish firmer safeguards\, practices and legislation reflecting these values. Following decades of discrimination\, we are proud to celebrate women who work for basic inclusion\, equality and fairness.”

SUMMARY:RVDW October 2023 Meeting: Freedom to Read
DESCRIPTION:How to Resist Book Bans in Your Community\n\n\n\n@ The Club Room at Hunting Hills Country Club\, 5220 Hunting Hills Dr\, Roanoke\, VA 24018Please RSVP to rvdemocraticwomen@gmail.com and arrive by 11:30am if you plan to order lunch. HHCC offers a menu ranging in price from $15 to $18. Program begins promptly at 12:OOnoon followed by the business meeting. \n\n\n\n(Update: Freedom to Read: Key Take-Aways (roanokevalleydemocraticwomen.com) \n\n\n\nBook censorship is a serious threat to the freedom of expression\, diversity of perspectives\, and quality of education in the United States. In recent years\, there has been a surge of attempts to ban or challenge books in public schools and libraries\, especially those that deal with race\, gender\, and sexuality. These efforts are often driven by political agendas\, misinformation\, and fear\, and they undermine the rights of students\, teachers\, librarians\, and parents to access and share information. \n\n\n\nAt our October meeting\, our last general meeting of 2023\, featured speaker Sara Sprague will discuss some of the trends in book banning attempts\, how they are affecting us locally\, and the strategies and resources that can be used to resist them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur October Speaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSara Sprague is an attorney\, librarian\, and consultant based in Roanoke\, Virginia. She holds a J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law and an M.M.L.I.S. from the University of Southern California. Sara has been practicing law for over 15 years and currently runs her own law and consulting practice\, Sprague Law & Consulting\, focusing on nonprofits\, small businesses\, estate planning\, and public interest law. In addition\, Sara is an academic librarian whose work focuses on digital scholarship and information literacy. She has also served on numerous local nonprofit boards and long been active in social justice advocacy work. In all her roles\, she enjoys solving problems and helping people find the information and resources they need. \n\n\n\nOctober Candidate Guest: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSamantha Newell\, Write-In Candidate\, Roanoke County School Board – Catawba District “For too long\, administrators have ignored the voices of our experienced and dedicated teachers.” Samantha is committed to working directly with teachers to create policies that support them and the students they care about. “Teachers know what their students need and I will work hard to make sure they get it! No two students are alike.” Samantha supports providing teachers and administrators the resources they need to ensure each student can learn in the way that suits them best. “The needs in Catawba do not necessarily reflect the needs in Cave Spring.” Samantha wants to work with districts to ensure that each district’s individual priorities are met in order to build a stronger Roanoke County for all. As a parent and experienced coach\, Samantha knows how important it is to listen to students. “In our rapidly changing world\, students need extra support to navigate the extremism that is plaguing our society. Asking children about their dreams\, their experiences\, and their needs is the best way to learn how to help them.” By engaging students in a dialogue\, Samantha hopes to provide new avenues for students to develop leadership skills and plan for their future in Roanoke County.Website: www.Samantha4RoCo.comEmail: Samantha4RoCo@gmail.com Cell: 321-987-5130Social Media: www.facebook.com/samantha4roco

SUMMARY:RVDW February 2023 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:@ Montano’s\, 3733 Franklin Rd SW\, Roanoke\, VA 24014. Program begins at 12:OO noon followed by the business meeting. Please arrive at 11:30 am if ordering lunch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoanoke Valley Democratic Women wishes to give special recognition to February as Heart Month and Black History Month. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is critical that we take care of ourselves\, get those check-ups\, eat the right foods and\, above all\, exercise and spend quality time with friends. We have invited special guests today who will be talking with us about establishing those kinds of goals in support of ourselves. Black History month remains a powerful symbolic celebration and a time for acknowledgement\, reflection and inspiration. The national 2023 Black History Month theme\, “Black Resistance\,” explores how African Americans have addressed historic and ongoing disadvantages and oppression. We encourage all of you to become involved and do all that you can to foster an environment where we all are recognized for our abilities and valued for our contributions. \n\n\n\nAbout our speakers: We are pleased to have women who are actively working in our community to further the education and support of us all as community members. \n\n\n\nDr. Karen Perkins is a Carilion family doc and\, since 2017 has been the vice director of the Compress and Shock Foundation\, a Roanoke based 501-c-3 non-profit\, whose mission is to bring free and equitable access to CPR and AED education to all communities\, with a specific dedication to those communities most adversely affected by cardiac arrest due to race\, ethnicity\, primary language\, or access to healthcare education. Since 2017\, the foundation has trained about 6\,000 learners for free and placed about 75 donated AEDs in the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men\, women\, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Meanwhile\, Dr. Perkins reports\, “Female victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive less bystander CPR and use of an AED than male victims.” \n\n\n\nRobyn Mitchell\, Eureka Park Artist in Residence and owner of Lovelight Design Studio\, works at the intersection of creativity\, entrepreneurship\, design\, consulting\, and social justice. Providing design services for a wide range of civic and nonprofit organizations\, Robyn is building a broad portfolio of clients while pushing her creativity into new arenas. As an artist in residence\, Robyn will engage neighbors and stakeholders in arts-based participation strategies around the development of a new community center in Roanoke’s Eureka Park. \n\n\n\nMarlee Coles\, is a Texture Expert who specializes in hair color and the MIZANI Aircut.
