SUMMARY:RVDW May 2025 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:(Post-meeting update: Takeaways & Resources: May Meeting Recap) \n\n\n\n“Proposed Changes to Medicaid: What They Mean for SWVA“ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuest speaker Donna Littlepage explores the up-to-date likely impact of Republican-proposed changes to Medicaid\, particularly on Virginia’s Medicaid expansion program. She’ll help us understand the potential for a significant negative impact on the valley and Southwest Virginia\, potentially leading to the loss of health insurance for hundreds of thousands of residents\, especially low-income families and children. Initially the proposed cuts appear to disproportionately affect rural areas and jeopardize access to essential health services and our rural hospitals. The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives aims to get their version of the Reconciliation Bill to the floor by May 19. GOP leaders want to send it to the president by July 4. \n\n\n\nJoin us at Montano’s\, located at 3733 Franklin Road SW. Our program begins at 12:00 noon followed by a brief business meeting. If ordering lunch\, please arrive between 11:15 and 11:45 to place your order. While an RSVP is not required\, we appreciate you taking time to help us get a headcount for our meeting. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Guest Speaker:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonna Littlepage\, RetiredFormer VP of Finance\, Carillion ClinicFormer SVP\, Population HealthFounding CFO\, VTC School of MedicineFormer CPA \n\n\n\nDonna Littlepage earned her undergraduate degree in Accounting and her MBA from Virginia Tech. Recognizing this anniversary not only pays tribute to the struggle for justice and equality but also reaffirms our collective commitment to protecting and strengthening the right to vote for all. At a time when voting rights continue to face challenges\, commemorating this milestone serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to ensure a truly inclusive democracy. \n\n\n\nElecting Democrats in Virginia in 2025 is pivotal for safeguarding and advancing voting rights and civil liberties in the Commonwealth. \n\n\n\n\nIt’s Democrats who introduced bills to prevent voter roll purges\, especially affecting military families\, and to strengthen election board responsibilities. \n\n\n\nIt’s Democrats who initiated a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the restoration of voting rights for individuals who have completed felony sentences. \n\n\n\nIt’s Democrats who initiated constitutional amendments to protect reproductive freedom\, abortion rights\, and marriage equality.\n\n\n\n\nThese initiatives face opposition from Republicans. Electing Democrats – as Governor\, Lt. Governor\, Attorney General\, and expanding the Democratic majority in the Virginia General Assembly – will ensure the passage and implementation of these critical protections\, reinforcing Virginia’s commitment to civil liberties and democratic participation. \n\n\n\nOur Mission: Electing Democrats!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETSMember Ticket – $50Ticket PLUS Membership – $70Non-Member Ticket – $75 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSOR NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSORSHIP CATEGORIES \n\n\n\nChampions – $2\,500Includes 8 event tickets PLUSRecognition on sponsor page and at Dems After Dark events through 2026. Unlike phone banking or postcards\, face-to-face conversations are the most effective way to engage voters\, build trust\, and ensure they have the information—and motivation—they need to vote. \n\n\n\nHere’s what we’ll cover: \n\n\n\n\nWhat canvassing looks like in 2025\n\n\n\nTips for effective\, safe\, and FUN canvassing\n\n\n\nHow to find and sign up for upcoming volunteer opportunities\n\n\n\nThe different roles in canvassing—there’s a place for everyone!\n\n\n\nBeyond canvassing\n\n\n\n\nWith early voting in Virginia starting Friday\, September 19\, now is the time to take action and help drive voter turnout. \n\n\n\nWe’ve also invited all of our Democratic candidates and their campaign representatives to join us\, bring yard signs\, and connect with volunteers. \n\n\n\nPLUS: We’ll announce and present our 2025 campaign contributions. \n\n\n\nLet’s get organized\, energized\, and ready to win this November. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing everyone at Montano’s\, 3733 Franklin Rd SW. Our program begins at 12:00 noon followed by a brief business meeting. If ordering lunch\, please arrive between 11:15 and 11:45 to place your order. SUMMARY:RVDW October 2025 Meeting: Author Timothy Heaphy
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to welcome author and attorney Timothy Heaphy as our guest speaker at our RVDW October 2025 meeting. Our meeting falls just 10 days before Virginia’s November 4th general election. Heaphy’s insights and his discussion of his 2024 Harbingers: What January 6 and Charlottesville Reveal About Rising Threats to American Democracy will certainly inform our understanding of the current state of American democracy. (Pre-order links below.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our SpeakerTimothy HeaphyChief Investigative Counsel of the House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. He also oversaw the independent investigation into the August 12\, 2017 riot in Charlottesville\, Virginia. He is currently partner at Willkie\, Farr & Gallagher LLP and previously served as the Obama-appointed US Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. He lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia with his family. (Source: Penguin Random House) \n\n\n\nHeaphy offers sought-after expertise on the intersection of our legal system with democracy\, business\, and society. (Source: Speaker: Tim Heaphy | Leading Authorities Speakers) \n\n\n\nPRE-ORDER YOUR COPY. \n\n\n\nThank you to Rainy Day Reads\, local Roanoke bookseller and an RVDW 2025 sponsor\, for coordinating these orders for us. \n\n\n\n\nPick Up at Meeting\n\n\n\nShip to Home \n\n\n\nAudio Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom the publisher: As the lead investigator into both the 2017 racist riot in Charlottesville and the January 6 insurrection\, Tim Heaphy has a unique perspective on the cynicism and anger that also fueled Trump’s return to the Presidency. All 3 events\, both the violent protests and the peaceful and lawful decisions made at the ballot box in November of 2024\, reflect an increasing lack of trust in institutions among a growing number of Americans. In his page-turning book\, Heaphy shares what he saw and came to understand about what those events say about the state of American democracy. He examines how and why they took place with the hope that understanding the contexts of these events will be a crucial and helpful step toward avoiding similar episodes of political violence in the years ahead.Readers will travel alongside Heaphy as he organized his team and structured the massive investigations they were about to undertake\, as he interacts with politicians and members of law enforcement\, interviews planners\, perpetrators\, and bystanders\, gathers and sorts evidence\, and compels and records testimony in order to create a record for today as well as future generations. (Source: Penguin Random House) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing everyone at Montano’s\, 3733 Franklin Rd SW. We will begin our meeting promptly at 12:00 noon\, conducting a very brief business meeting first followed by Heaphy’s presentation. We hope this will allow Heaphy ample time for his remarks and for Q&A. \n\n\n\nWhile an RSVP for this meeting is not required\, we appreciate you taking time to help us get a headcount for our meeting.   \n\n\n\nPlease\, if you are ordering lunch\, arrive between 11:15 and 11:45. NO LUNCH ORDERS WILL BE TAKEN AFTER 11:45. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP
